Key points

  • Cystitis is far more common in women than in men.
  • Cloudy urine, or urine with an unusual smell, can occur.
  • Drinking plenty of water during treatment helps flush the bladder.

About cystitis

Cystitis ranks among the most common infections around the world. In warm, humid weather, hygiene and fluid intake deserve extra attention. It can occur in anyone, in any season.

Symptoms

Passing urine can burn or sting. The need to go may be frequent and urgent even if little urine is present. Some people notice dull pressure in the lower abdomen or pelvis.

How it is treated

Antibiotics are used for uncomplicated cystitis. A short antibiotic course is usual, and most uncomplicated cases settle within a few days. Nitrofurantoin is a tablet that concentrates in the urinary tract. It comes in 50 mg and 100 mg strengths; the nitrofurantoin ingredient page gives further detail. Norfloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone group and targets the bacteria that cause most bladder infections. Cefpodoxime is an oral cephalosporin and another option. Orders are shipped to Malaysia by pharmacy partners in India in discreet packaging.

When to see a doctor

Fever is not typical in uncomplicated cystitis. If fever appears with pain in the back or side, the infection may have reached the kidneys. That situation needs prompt medical attention.
