Helminthiasis
Helminthiasis is illness caused by parasitic worms. The worms most often involved are roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms. Infection can follow contact with soil or water that carries the parasites, and warm, damp surroundings make this more likely.
Medicine used to treat Helminthiasis
Key points
- Helminthiasis covers infection by several types of parasitic worm, not a single organism.
- Albendazole is active against many intestinal worms and may be given as one dose or as a short course, depending on the worm.
- Bleeding from the bowel, weight loss with no clear cause, strong stomach pain, or trouble that remains after treatment should prompt medical review.
How infection spreads
The parasites can be picked up from soil or water that has been contaminated. Places with heat and moisture, and rural areas in particular, see more transmission.
Treating helminthiasis
A short course of antiparasitic treatment is usual. Albendazole is widely used for intestinal worms and may be given as one dose or as a short course, depending on the worm. Albenza 400mg tablets contain albendazole. Orders are shipped from pharmacy partners in India to Malaysia in discreet packaging.
When to get medical help
Get medical advice if there is blood in the stool, weight loss with no clear reason, severe abdominal pain, or symptoms that do not settle after treatment. Some worm infections, such as tapeworm cysts or liver flukes, need a different approach.
