Tenofovir

Tenofovir is an antiviral medicine from the nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor group. It is used in combination treatment for HIV and, separately, to lower the chance of acquiring HIV before exposure. It is not taken on its own.

Medicine containing Tenofovir

Tenofovir + Emtricitabine

HIV Infection, Pre-exposure Prophylaxis

300/200mg

Tenofovir and emtricitabine are combined in a tablet for HIV infection and pre-exposure prophylaxis. It is supplied in a single strength; pack sizes vary. Each option lists its price per tablet.

Key points

  • Tenofovir blocks the enzyme HIV uses to copy its genetic material, which stops the virus from assembling new infectious particles.
  • It is given together with another antiviral rather than as a single medicine, and the pairing is what makes up a full regimen.
  • Extended use calls for checks on kidney function and bone mineral density, because both can be affected over time.

What tenofovir is and what it is used for

Tenofovir has two distinct roles. In people already living with HIV infection, it forms part of a combination regimen that lowers the amount of virus in the blood, which in turn helps the immune system hold its ground over the years. Separately, it is used for pre-exposure prophylaxis, where the aim is to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV in the first place.

Neither role amounts to a cure. The medicine keeps viral activity in check and reduces the chance of transmission; it does not clear the infection. Both uses depend on steady, consistent taking, since the concentrations in the bloodstream need to stay at an effective level between doses.

How it works

HIV needs a particular enzyme to turn its genetic material into DNA and then into fresh copies of itself. Tenofovir attaches to that enzyme and blocks it. With the step blocked, the virus cannot manufacture new particles, and the amount of virus already present can fall.

Because the medicine targets an enzyme specific to the virus, it leaves the replication of the body’s own cells alone. That selectivity is why it can be taken over long periods as part of a wider regimen. A lower viral load means less ongoing damage to the immune system.

Forms and combinations available

Tenofovir is normally supplied joined with a second antiviral, emtricitabine, in one tablet. The strength listed here is 300/200mg, under Tenofovir + Emtricitabine, and the recorded uses are HIV infection and pre-exposure prophylaxis. Combining two actives in a single tablet keeps the daily routine simple. Orders are shipped to Malaysia by pharmacy partners in India in discreet packaging.

Safety

Tell your prescriber about any existing conditions before you start, particularly anything affecting your kidneys or your bones, since these are the systems long-term antiviral use can touch. Confirm that the combination you receive matches the protocol you were given, whether that is treatment or prophylaxis.

Digestive discomfort, tiredness and mild headache are common while the body adjusts. Over longer periods, tests may show shifts in kidney markers or in bone mineral density, which is why follow-up monitoring is a routine part of taking this medicine.

Alcohol, some herbal supplements and other medicines that act on the kidneys can alter how tenofovir is handled by the body, so disclose every supplement and medicine you use. Product labelling and verified clinical sources remain the proper reference for contraindications, interactions and reactions.
