Premature ejaculation treatment: dapoxetine and fixed combinations

Premature ejaculation is when ejaculation occurs sooner than a person or their partner wants, and it happens often enough to cause distress. It is common and treatable through techniques, counselling, medicines, or a mix of these.

Dapoxetine

Dapoxetine is intended specifically for premature ejaculation. It is a short-acting SSRI, in the same group as certain antidepressants, but it is used as needed rather than every day, roughly one to three hours before sex. It is sold as Priligy and as the generic Poxet.

Safety and interactions

Dapoxetine may cause dizziness, fainting, blurred vision and sleepiness. Avoid driving or using machinery if these effects appear. Alcohol should be avoided, as it makes fainting and other unwanted effects more likely to lead to injury. Do not use dapoxetine with other SSRIs or antidepressants, tramadol, St John’s wort or certain other medicines. Tell a doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you take.

Dapoxetine with medicines for erectile dysfunction

Some generics pair dapoxetine with a treatment for erectile dysfunction, for men who have both conditions:

These fixed combinations are manufactured in India. Neither the FDA nor the EMA has approved them. They carry the warnings for both ingredients, including the prohibition on nitrates. The fainting risk from dapoxetine adds to the fall in blood pressure that an erectile dysfunction medicine can cause. When premature ejaculation is the only problem, dapoxetine alone is the simpler option.

When to get medical advice

See a GP if premature ejaculation is new, or if it comes with erection problems, pain or other symptoms. Erectile dysfunction may point to heart disease or diabetes. Treatment aimed at the cause often helps both conditions.
