Key points

  • An episode can last for as long as four weeks.
  • Most cases are viral and settle without specific treatment.
  • Bacterial infection is more likely when symptoms persist beyond the expected course or flare again after a short recovery.

What it is and what causes it

The sinuses fill with fluid during an episode. A viral infection often sets the process off. Bacteria account for a smaller share of cases and may complicate an illness that is not resolving.

Symptoms

Pressure behind the cheeks, in the forehead or around the eyes comes from fluid collecting in the sinuses.

Treatment

Saline nasal rinses, steam inhalation and enough fluid can help with comfort. These measures do not depend on whether the cause is viral or bacterial. Antibiotics become relevant when a bacterial cause is suspected. Moxifloxacin is one option for adults when first-line treatment has not worked or the infection is more severe; it is supplied as a 400mg tablet (Moxifloxacin product page). Pharmacy partners in India ship to Malaysia in discreet packaging.

When to see a doctor

Seek prompt medical care for a high fever, intense pain on one side of the face, swelling around the eye, a stiff neck, or when an initial improvement is followed by a sudden worsening.
