Key points

  • Moxifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used for community-acquired pneumonia, acute sinusitis and skin and soft tissue infection.
  • Its action begins within 1 to 2 hours and lasts about 24 hours.
  • It is not recommended for children or adolescents.

What moxifloxacin is used for

Moxifloxacin treats community-acquired pneumonia, acute sinusitis and skin and soft tissue infection. Each of these is a bacterial infection rather than a viral one. The medicine sits within the wider antibiotics group.

How it works

Moxifloxacin is a potent bactericidal agent. It inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, two enzymes the bacterial cell needs for DNA replication, repair and transcription. With those enzymes blocked, the bacteria cannot complete the processes required to multiply.

Moxifloxacin tablets

The oral form is a film-coated tablet containing 400mg of moxifloxacin (Moxifloxacin). Pharmacy partners in India prepare orders and ship them to Malaysia in discreet packaging.

Safety information

Do not use moxifloxacin if you are hypersensitive to it, or if you have a history of tendon disorders linked to fluoroquinolone treatment. It must not be used in pregnancy, and it must not be used while breastfeeding because of the risk of joint damage in the infant.

The medicine may impair your ability to drive or operate machinery. Avoid excessive exposure to sun or ultraviolet light, and watch for signs of tendon inflammation. Tendon rupture, a severe hypersensitivity reaction and QT interval prolongation each require immediate medical attention. If an allergic reaction occurs, stop taking the medicine.

Reported effects include nausea, diarrhoea and dizziness, as well as abdominal pain, vomiting and headache. Antacids, multivitamins containing iron or zinc, and warfarin interact with moxifloxacin.
