Key points

  • Reactions to food or insect venom can affect more than the skin.
  • Anaphylaxis develops quickly and can involve laboured breathing, a sharp fall in blood pressure or unconsciousness.
  • A short corticosteroid course may be used when antihistamines do not control wider inflammation.

Causes and triggers

Pollen, food, insect stings, latex and medicines can set off the immune response. Where humidity is high and plants pollinate all year, exposure to triggers can remain steady instead of seasonal.

Symptoms

Mild to moderate signs include itching, hives, sneezing, watery eyes and a runny nose. Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat can follow food or venom exposure.

Treatment

Antihistamines ease itching and hives in mild reactions. If a rash is widespread, the face swells or symptoms persist, a short course of prednisolone can calm the immune response. Prednisolone tablets are supplied in 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg strengths. They are also used in asthma and rheumatoid arthritis.
