Bimatoprost

Bimatoprost is a prostaglandin analogue supplied as eye drops to lower pressure inside the eye. It is used in glaucoma and in ocular hypertension, where pressure that stays too high can harm the optic nerve over time. Each product is a 3 ml bottle of sterile solution.

Key points

  • Bimatoprost is a prostaglandin analogue, classed among the anti-glaucoma medicines.
  • It is not for paediatric use.
  • Caution is advised in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

What bimatoprost is used for

Both conditions it treats come back to how fluid leaves the front of the eye. In glaucoma, that fluid drains too slowly and pressure builds up; in ocular hypertension, readings run higher than they should before any damage to the nerve can be detected. Easing the pressure reduces the risk of losing more vision.

Bimatoprost is also used in normal-tension glaucoma, where the optic nerve is damaged even though pressure readings sit within the usual range. The aim does not change: reach a level your eye specialist judges safe for your optic nerve.

How it works

A thin fluid, aqueous humour, circulates through the front of the eye, bringing nutrients and carrying waste away. If it cannot leave quickly enough, pressure climbs. Bimatoprost raises outflow along the uveoscleral pathway, a route that runs beside the eye’s usual drain, so fluid gains a second exit and pressure falls without the eye having to produce less liquid.

The drop starts to act within 4 to 8 hours of first use, and its effect on pressure lasts around 24 hours. Pressure often takes several weeks of steady use to settle.

Forms and products

Both bimatoprost products are sterile eye drop solutions in a 3 ml bottle. Careprost + Applicators includes applicators, which may suit someone who finds it hard to tilt the head back or keep a hand steady. Bimatoprost is the bottle on its own. Both contain bimatoprost and list glaucoma and ocular hypertension among their uses, so the practical differences come down to packaging and price rather than the medicine. Bimatoprost falls under eye care, alongside other drops used in these conditions. Wash your hands first and keep the bottle tip away from surfaces. Pharmacy partners in India ship to Malaysia in discreet packaging.

Before you start

Do not use bimatoprost if you have had an allergic reaction to it. Tell your eye specialist about past inflammation inside the eye, a detached retina, or surgery you have planned. Soft contact lenses can absorb the preservative in the solution, so take them out before the drop and leave them out for at least 15 minutes. A small amount of the medicine reaches the bloodstream, so other conditions you have are worth mentioning at the same appointment. If a second eye drop is part of your routine, keep a gap of at least five minutes between them. Using another prostaglandin drop alongside bimatoprost offers no extra benefit and can add to side effects.

Side effects

Redness and a burning sensation in the eye are the usual minor complaints. Dry eyes, and eyelashes that grow longer, thicker or darker, are moderate effects. A foreign-body feeling or blurred vision just after the drop is common and soon passes. Eyelid skin may darken with continued use, and the iris can deepen in colour over months; that change is permanent and easier to see in lighter eyes. Iridocyclitis, inflammation inside the eye, is serious and requires immediate medical attention.
