Key points
- Famotidine is an H2 receptor antagonist, the class also called H2 blockers.
- Tablets are film-coated and come in 20 mg and 40 mg strengths.
- It is intended for adults.
What famotidine is used for
It is used in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, in peptic ulcer disease affecting the stomach or duodenum, and in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, where the stomach makes too much acid.
How it works
Famotidine blocks histamine H2 receptors on the stomach lining. With those receptors blocked, the stomach produces less acid.
The famotidine option listed here is Pepcid, a film-coated tablet in 20 mg and 40 mg. Pharmacy partners in India ship orders to Malaysia in discreet packaging.
Safety
Do not take famotidine if you are allergic to it or to other H2 blockers. Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, as a lower dose may be needed, and if you have phenylketonuria. Headache and dizziness are the usual minor effects; constipation and diarrhoea can also occur. Hives, facial or throat swelling, or difficulty breathing need immediate medical attention. Ask a doctor before use in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and confirm breastfeeding suitability with a qualified clinician or pharmacist.
