Key points

  • Tinidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic used for giardiasis, trichomoniasis and anaerobic bacterial infections.
  • Its effect begins about 2 hours after a dose and lasts around 12 to 24 hours.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking tinidazole and for a period after the course ends; it also interacts with warfarin.

What tinidazole is used for

Tinidazole treats giardiasis and trichomoniasis, both protozoal infections, and it is also used in anaerobic bacterial infections. It belongs among the antibiotics that target organisms living without oxygen, and it is an alternative to other medicines in that group.

How it works

Inside a susceptible organism, tinidazole causes DNA strands to break and stops further DNA synthesis. Without working DNA, the organism cannot multiply, and the infection is brought under control. Plasma levels appear quickly, with an onset time of about 2 hours, and the medicine’s activity persists for roughly 12 to 24 hours.

Forms and brands available

Tinidazole is made as a tablet. The Tinidazole 500mg tablet is a branded generic supplied through MayChemist, not an originator brand pack; more detail sits on the tinidazole ingredient page. Pharmacy partners in India ship orders to Malaysia in discreet packaging.

Safety

Tinidazole should not be used by anyone with a hypersensitivity to nitroimidazoles, or by people with neurological disorders. Anyone taking it needs monitoring for peripheral neuropathy.

Nausea and a metallic taste are the minor effects most often reported. Diarrhoea and anorexia can also occur. Seizures and peripheral neuropathy are serious effects and need immediate medical attention.

Alcohol interacts with tinidazole, and so does warfarin. In pregnancy, it should be avoided during the first trimester. Breastfeeding should stop for 3 days after treatment ends. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you currently take.
