Androxal is a 50mg tablet of enclomiphene, a selective oestrogen receptor modulator. It is used for secondary hypogonadism in men, a condition where the testes are able to produce testosterone but pituitary signalling to them is inadequate.
Enclomiphene is the trans isomer of clomiphene. By blocking oestrogenic suppression of the HPG axis, it stimulates gonadotropin release and supports the body’s own testosterone production; onset is usually within 1–2 weeks. The EMA’s CHMP issued a negative opinion in 2018 and refused marketing authorisation for EnCyzix (EMA assessment report). Contraindications include hypersensitivity to enclomiphene, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Clomiphene, the parent drug, is contraindicated in liver disease or a history of liver dysfunction. Thromboembolism and visual disturbance are serious effects needing immediate medical attention.
