It works by preferentially inhibiting COX-2 enzymes, which cuts prostaglandin synthesis and so reduces inflammation. A tablet starts acting within 30 to 60 minutes and lasts about 24 hours. NSAIDs carry an increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, including myocardial infarction and stroke, which can be fatal; that risk may appear early in treatment and rise the longer the medicine is used. Meloxicam is contraindicated after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (DailyMed).
