It works by inhibiting serotonin reuptake in the brain, increasing serotonin availability; effects usually start within one to two weeks. Do not stop abruptly; driving may be impaired. Serotonin syndrome or suicidal ideation needs immediate medical attention. It must not be used by anyone hypersensitive to paroxetine, or with monoamine oxidase inhibitors or pimozide. Alcohol and St John’s wort are interactions. In short-term studies, antidepressants raised the risk of suicidal thinking and behaviour in children, adolescents and young adults versus placebo.
