Key points

  • Rosuvastatin starts to act within 1 to 2 weeks, and each dose lasts about 24 hours.
  • Tablets are made in 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg strengths.
  • It is used in children aged 6 years and older for heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia.

What rosuvastatin is used for

Rosuvastatin treats hypercholesterolaemia, where blood cholesterol is higher than it should be. It is also used for cardiovascular risk reduction in people with raised lipid levels. The medicine lowers low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and raises high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.

How rosuvastatin works

Rosuvastatin is a selective, competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme that carries out the rate-limiting step in cholesterol synthesis. That step converts HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a precursor of cholesterol. With the enzyme inhibited, the liver makes less cholesterol and takes up more LDL from the blood, so the amount circulating in the body falls.

Rosuvastatin tablets from MayChemist

Rosuvastatin is listed as a film-coated tablet. These are generic products rather than originator brand packs. The rosuvastatin generic page sets out the range, and related options are grouped under cholesterol management. Orders are shipped from pharmacy partners in India to Malaysia in discreet packaging.

Who should not take rosuvastatin

The medicine is contraindicated in active liver disease, in pregnancy and during breastfeeding. Liver enzymes should be monitored while treatment continues. Unexplained muscle pain or weakness should be reported promptly, because muscle symptoms can be an early sign of a serious reaction.

Side effects and interactions

Headache, nausea and myalgia are common. Dizziness, constipation and abdominal pain are also reported. Rhabdomyolysis and myopathy are serious reactions that require immediate medical attention. Rosuvastatin interacts with ciclosporin and with vitamin K antagonists.
