Patient summary

Montelukast 4mg, 5mg and 10mg, as chewable and film-coated tablets, used for asthma and allergic rhinitis. A leukotriene receptor antagonist.

Mechanism of action

Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It selectively blocks the action of cysteinyl leukotrienes in the lungs, which are inflammatory mediators released in response to inhaled allergens, thereby preventing airway constriction and swelling.

The active ingredient, montelukast, is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It comes as tablets in 4, 5 and 10 mg strengths for asthma and allergic rhinitis. MSD is the originator; Montair is another name.

Montelukast selectively blocks cysteinyl leukotrienes in the lungs, inflammatory mediators released in response to inhaled allergens, preventing airway constriction and swelling. It is not a treatment for an acute asthma attack. Serious neuropsychiatric events have been reported, including agitation, aggression, depression, sleep disturbance, and suicidal thoughts or behaviour, including suicide. They can occur during treatment or after it stops, in people with or without a previous psychiatric history. Stop the medicine and contact a healthcare provider immediately if these symptoms appear. Churg-Strauss syndrome also requires immediate medical attention. Do not use it if you are hypersensitive to montelukast. It interacts with phenobarbital.
