Naltrexone 50mg tablets are an opioid antagonist for opioid dependence and alcohol dependence. They are also known as Revia and Adepend. It blocks opioid receptors, preventing opioids taken from outside the body from acting and reducing alcohol’s rewarding effect.
Start only after opioids have cleared the body. Otherwise withdrawal can follow; the label advises at least 7 to 10 days off short-acting opioids, or up to two weeks off buprenorphine or methadone, with a naloxone challenge test or urine screen to confirm. Liver function is monitored; hepatitis and significant liver dysfunction have been reported. Depression or liver injury needs immediate medical attention. Opioid tolerance falls, so a previously used dose can now cause overdose; carry medical alert identification. It interacts with opioids and thioridazine.
