Patient summary

Allopurinol 100mg and 300mg tablets, used in the management of gout, hyperuricaemia and uric acid nephropathy. A xanthine oxidase inhibitor.

Mechanism of action

Zyloprim works by inhibiting the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which is responsible for the conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine and xanthine to uric acid, thereby lowering serum and urinary uric acid concentrations.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Use only if clearly necessary and potential benefits outweigh risks. Breastfeeding: Excreted in breast milk; consult physician before use.

Zyloprim is a tablet containing allopurinol, available in 100mg and 300mg strengths. It is used in the management of gout, hyperuricaemia and uric acid nephropathy. Aspen Pharmacare is the originator company, and the medicine is also known as Zyloric.

Allopurinol is a structural analogue of hypoxanthine. It lowers uric acid by inhibiting xanthine oxidase, the enzyme that converts hypoxanthine to xanthine and xanthine to uric acid. Onset takes 2 to 6 weeks, and treatment is long-term. Discontinue and seek medical attention immediately if a rash appears: the label warns that a skin rash may be followed by more severe hypersensitivity reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, generalised vasculitis, irreversible hepatotoxicity and, on rare occasions, death. Adequate fluid intake should be maintained.

FAQ

What conditions does Zyloprim treat?

Zyloprim contains allopurinol and is taken for gout, hyperuricaemia and uric acid nephropathy. Zyloprim works by inhibiting the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which is responsible for the conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine and xanthine to uric acid, thereby lowering serum and urinary uric acid concentrations.

Does Zyloprim have side effects?

Yes, it can. The ones people notice most with allopurinol are rash. Some people also get nausea and diarrhoea. Rarer but serious: severe hypersensitivity syndrome and severe skin reaction. These need urgent medical help.

Is the Zyloprim here the brand version?

No. Zyloprim is the original brand from Aspen Pharmacare; we use the name so you can tell which medicine it is. What we send is a generic with the same active ingredient (allopurinol) at the same dose, usually a well-known Indian branded generic. Which brand you get depends on stock.

How long before Zyloprim takes effect?

Allopurinol usually kicks in within 2 to 6 weeks. Timing varies from one person to the next.

Which medicines don't mix with Zyloprim?

Allopurinol can interact with azathioprine, mercaptopurine and warfarin. Before you start Zyloprim, let your doctor or pharmacist know everything else you take.

Is there another brand of allopurinol?

You may also see allopurinol sold as Zyloric.

How much is Zyloprim?

That depends on the strength and pack you pick. Zyloprim comes in 100 and 300mg strengths, in packs of 30 to 360 tablets. You'll see the price per tablet for each option above, in ringgit by default or another currency you choose. Bigger packs work out cheaper per tablet. Pay with Bitcoin or Ethereum and you get an extra 10% off.

Can I order Zyloprim online without a prescription?

Online, yes. MayChemist doesn't ask for a prescription to order Zyloprim. We're an online store, not a dispensing pharmacy: we place your order and arrange the delivery for you.

What you will receive

Zyloprim is the originator brand name, made by Aspen Pharmacare. We use it here to identify the medicine only; we are not affiliated with Aspen Pharmacare and do not ship the original Zyloprim.

  • You receive a generic equivalent: the same active ingredient (Allopurinol) at the same dose, mostly recognised Indian branded generics from vetted manufacturers.
  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock at the dispatching warehouse.
  • Inactive ingredients, tablet appearance and packaging can differ from the original brand; the active ingredient and dose are the same.
