Patient summary

Desogestrel with ethinylestradiol tablets for contraception, a combined pill acting through ovulation inhibition and a thicker cervical barrier.

Mechanism of action

Combines a progestogen and an oestrogen to provide contraceptive protection through ovulation inhibition and by changing cervical mucus and the endometrium to discourage sperm passage and implantation.

Mircette is a combined oral contraceptive tablet containing desogestrel and ethinylestradiol in a 0.15/0.02mg strength. It is used for contraception. The originator company is Organon, and the same combination is also known as Mercilon, Gedarel and Desogen.

It works by inhibiting ovulation and by changing cervical mucus and the endometrium to discourage sperm passage and implantation. Onset is 1–2 weeks and duration is 24 hours. Combined oral contraceptives raise the risk of venous thromboembolism. They are contraindicated with a history of venous thromboembolism, cerebrovascular disease, severe headache or breast cancer. Smoking raises the risk of serious cardiovascular events, and use is contraindicated in women over 35 who smoke. Pregnancy is contraindicated and breastfeeding is not recommended.

What you will receive

Mircette is the originator brand name, made by Organon. We use it here to identify the medicine only; we are not affiliated with Organon and do not ship the original Mircette.

  • You receive a generic equivalent: the same active ingredient (Desogestrel / Ethinylestradiol) at the same dose, mostly recognised Indian branded generics from vetted manufacturers.
  • The exact brand supplied depends on what is in stock at the dispatching warehouse.
  • Inactive ingredients, tablet appearance and packaging can differ from the original brand; the active ingredient and dose are the same.
